Sverre Varvin, MD, DPhil, is a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, training analyst, and supervisor of the Norwegian Psychoanalytic Society and the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA). He is also professor emeritus at Oslo Metropolitan University. Professor Varvin served two terms as president of the Norwegian Psychoanalytic Society, and held positions including executive committee member of the European Psychoanalytic Federation, Vice-President of the IPA (2001-2003), and member of the IPA Research Committee. Since 2006, he has been a member of the IPA China Committee, and has served as its chair since 2013, making outstanding contributions to the development of psychoanalysis in mainland China. As the international initiator of the China-Norway Psychoanalytic Training Program, he has acted as the chief training teacher for the program since 2006. He was awarded the IPA Sigourney Award in 2004 and the King's Medal of Merit in 2013. He has published numerous articles and books on traumatization, refugees, terrorism, as well as research on psychoanalytic treatment process and outcome.

Focused on the theme of trauma, the seminar began with an explanation of the concept of trauma and its developmental dimensions, followed by a discussion of the risk of collapse of social order and structure in the context of social unrest and atrocities. Psychoanalysis, as "the third," plays a mediating role in containing, understanding, and reflecting at the individual, group, and societal levels. The course further explored the application of psychoanalysis in dealing with extremely traumatized individuals. Combining research on trauma literature and clinical work experience, Professor Sverre Varvin and candidates engaged in in-depth discussions, which were highly enlightening for handling trauma in clinical practice.

Dr. Arlene Richards is a Training and Supervising Analyst of the American Psychoanalytic Association and the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA), Guest Professor of the Sino-American Advanced Psychoanalytic Training Program, Doctor of Education (Ed.D.), and a Clinical Psychologist. She delved deeply into femininity, female genital anxiety, and the female body (sphincter and genital perception), as well as how these factors contribute to the formation of female body image and gender identity. Her research not only offers a fresh perspective for understanding female psychological development but also challenges traditional psychoanalytic narratives, providing a more contemporary and comprehensive framework. Additionally, Dr. Richards emphasized that today's psychoanalytic practice must keep pace with the times, particularly noting that some psychoanalytic theories lag behind the current social environment and patients' life contexts. As analysts, we need to bridge temporal and spatial distances, strive to understand patients' life backgrounds, and develop theories that more closely align with their personal experiences.

Dr. Nancy Goodman is a Training and Supervising Analyst of the Contemporary Freudian Society, Washington Psychoanalytic Institute, and the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA). She further explored the prejudices regarding female roles and femininity in both societal and psychoanalytic thought, as well as how these prejudices have evolved with the changes of times and the development of psychoanalytic theories. She emphasized that psychoanalysis offers women opportunities to understand their own unconscious motivations and desires, thereby liberating themselves from restrictions and achieving creativity, love and autonomy.

Nancy Goodman

Doug Chavis, M.D., is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Washington-Baltimore Institute for Psychoanalysis in the USA. He is a child, adolescent and adult psychoanalyst, and a child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist. He teaches psychoanalysis at the Washington-Baltimore Institute. He discussed how psychoanalysis can draw on and mutually enhance disciplines such as neuroscience, social psychology, sociology, and infant observation. From the perspective of the relational school, he explored the contributions of attachment research and mentalization studies to the development of psychoanalysis. Through detailed observations of mother-infant interactions, he illuminated the complex emotions of longing and avoidance experienced by individuals with avoidant attachment when facing intimacy, and further explored how these emotions are linked to clinical dissociation and internal sadomasochistic patterns. Professor Chavis advocated for inclusivity among theories, emphasizing the necessity of dialogue between psychoanalysis and other disciplines.

Deborah Mclntyre, who has a Doctorate in Education, is an IPA Training and Supervising Analyst. She has served as the Chair of both the Melbourne Branch of the Australian Psychoanalytic Society and the Melbourne Institute. She provided profound insights into child psychoanalysis. Through a meticulous comparison of the attitudinal and technical differences between Anna Freud and Melanie Klein—two giants of psychoanalysis—in the field of child psychoanalysis, Dr. Mclntyre highlighted Klein's contributions to child psychoanalysis, particularly the significance of early development, unconscious fantasy, and anxiety, as well as the role of play in child analysis. She emphasized the possibility and importance of deeply exploring a child's inner world, as well as the necessity of addressing transference during the analytic process.

James.

James W. Anderson, PhD. Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Northwestern University Former President, Chicago Psychoanalytic Society Author of Psychobiography: In Search of the Inner Life (Oxford University Press, 2024). He explained how Winnicott conducted psychoanalysis in a systematic and deliberate manner, providing a holding environment and adapting to patients' needs to allow their true selves to emerge and develop. He emphasized that analysts should be aware of and work through their hatred towards patients while maintaining sincere love, appreciation, and support for them.

M. Sagman Kayatekin, M.D., graduated from Hacettepe University Medical Faculty, completed systematic training in adult psychiatry, and obtained certification as a psychoanalyst from the Boston Psychoanalytic Society. He has taught at multiple renowned medical schools, and currently serves as Visiting Professor at Tongji Medical College of China, and faculty member of the Psychoanalytic Institute for Central Asia in Kazakhstan. Over his more than 40-year career, he has balanced clinical practice with teaching and supervision, including serving as Medical Director of the Professionals Program at the Menninger Clinic. Dr. Sagman Kayatekin conducted an in-depth exploration of thePsychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (PDM-2) . During this seminar, Dr. Kayatekin specifically selected Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) as a case study to elaborate on its psychodynamic diagnosis and treatment methods. He emphasized that PDM-2’s classification not only focuses on the superficial manifestations of symptoms but also prioritizes exploring patients’ inner experiences and psychological conflicts, thereby offering more precise guidance for treatment.

Organized by Professor Tong Jun, the founding chair of the IPA China Study Group in Wuhan, the 4th Group of IPA Candidates in China participated in a three-day academic seminar at the Wuhan Institute of Psychoanalysis from November 8 to 10, 2024. This training received strong support from the Sino-American Advanced Psychoanalytic Training Program.

This program brought together authoritative faculty from the Sino-American Advanced Psychoanalytic Training Program Leonie Sullivan, Katherine Mary Kendall, Karen Proner, Pamela Shein, Yossi Tamir, and Timothy Keogh. As senior IPA training analysts and supervisors, they leveraged their profound clinical experience and solid academic accumulations to deliver a brilliant academic feast of psychoanalysis for the candidates.

Leonie Sullivan, Training Analyst and Supervisor (Australia), Chair of the National Education Coordination Committee. Leader of Seminars on Infant Observation and Psychiatric Observation. Member of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA) and the Australian Psychoanalytical Association. Member of the NSW Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. Member of the Australian Association of Social Workers (Accredited in Mental Health). Recognized Balint Leader and Trainer. With over 35 years of experience working with inpatients, outpatients, and staff groups in public mental health hospitals. By studying Freuds classic literature, we systematically sorted out the core mechanism governing human mental functioningthe pleasure principle and the reality principle. These two principles are not opposed to each other but present a dynamically balanced and complementary relationship, and the quality of their adaptation directly affects the health of an individuals mental functioning and their effectiveness in adapting to reality. Based on this core theory, we further explored the practical pathways of infant observation training in a training context, clarified the key value of this training for gaining insight into the vulnerability of individuals early development, and deepened our understanding of core issues such as "the need for individuals early development to be seen and held."

Katherine Mary Kendall, Doctor of Clinical Psychology, Training Analyst and Supervisor of the Australian Psychoanalytical Association (APAS). She has extensive experience in analytical work with children, adolescents, and adults. She holds a senior position in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service at Austin Hospital in Melbourne. From an object relations perspective, Dr. Katherine focuses on the core role of "skin experience" in the development of individualsearly object relations, providing candidates with a new perspective that combines theoretical depth and practical value in clinical assessment and intervention, infant observation training, adjustments to therapistsworking stances, and the interpretation of personality and relational patterns.

Karen PronerBachelor and Master of Arts in Psychology, Boston University (USA); Master of Arts, University of East London (UK). Specialist in short-term dynamic therapy, psychoanalytic family therapy, and couple therapy. Trained and practiced in London from 1978 to 2001, serving as Associate Professor at the University of East London. Since 2001, she has maintained a private practice in New York (USA), and holds membership in the American Psychoanalytic Association. She is also a training and supervising analyst for children and adults at the Contemporary Freudian Society (USA). As a certified short-term dynamic therapist and psychoanalytic family/couple therapist, she gained extensive training and work experience at the Tavistock Institute in the UK, fostering profound expertise in object relations theory—with particular depth in the works of Melanie Klein, Wilfred Bion, and Donald Meltzer. She has published dozens of academic papers and books in related fields. By introducing Esther Bicks theory of the secondary skin and integrating her own published work, Karen systematically elaborates on various early mechanisms through which infants resist self-disorganization. She points out that the primitive connection between infants and the nipple constitutes the earliest form of "holding," serving as a crucial foundation for infants to establish a sense of security and maintain the integrity of the self. More importantly, Karen further emphasizes the dynamic nature of the mothers role in early mother-infant relationships, clarifies the deprivation experiences that mothers themselves may encounter, and proposes the core perspective of "empowering infant development by supporting mothers." This highlights the key necessity of providing infants with stable and consistent support for the construction of their healthy early psychological structures.

Pamela Shein, Child and Adolescent Training Analyst at the Australian Psychoanalytical Association, Chair of the National Education and Training Committee (NEAT) of the Australian Psychoanalytical Association, and Coordinator of the Study Group at the Sydney Psychoanalytical Association. Pamela introduced a unique perspective in her course, guiding candidates to focus on and explore the realm of potential prenatal experiences. Integrating relevant research, she pointed out that the alternation between a mother’s voice and silence may enable the fetus to gain primitive experiences of "presence" and "absence," thereby giving rise to a prenatal proto-object with acoustic properties—tentatively termed the "sound-object." This special object is not only likely associated with the infant’s preconception of the breast but also can be regarded as the prototype of the postnatal maternal internal object. Based on this perspective, the course further clarified the significant value of the "sound dimension" in clinical practice, emphasizing in particular that this easily overlooked dimension should be prioritized and integrated into the analytical work with borderline and psychotic patients, thus providing new insights for clinical intervention.

Yossi Tamir, Graduated from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Training Analyst and Training Supervisor; Member of the Israeli Psychoanalytical Association and the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA); Member of the International Association for Self Psychology (IASP). Faculty Member of the Jerusalem Psychoanalytic Institute, the Graduate School of Tel Aviv University, and the Winnicott Center in Tel Aviv. Yossi guided the candidates in class to focus on the dialectical relationship between "empathy" and "failure" in the therapeutic process. He emphasized that empathy is the core bond for building a therapeutic alliance, while "failure experiences" in therapy are not purely negative outcomes. Instead, they can serve as opportunities to promote patients' self-exploration and repair relational traumaswith the key lying in how therapists accept and transform such experiences through an empathetic stance. Additionally, he deconstructed the dual nature of narcissism from a psychoanalytic perspective: narcissism can either function as a defense mechanism for patients to resist anxiety and avoid deep emotional connections, or act as an internal drive to stimulate their construction of self-identity and advance the analytic process. Both perspectives reveal the importance of understanding patients' complex psychological traits (such as narcissism) and flexibly applying core therapeutic attitudes (such as empathy) in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. Therapists must acknowledge the defensive and motivational aspects of narcissism, embrace patients' emotional experiences with empathy, and even convert setbacks and "failures" in therapy into healing resources that foster patients' psychological growth.

The training focused on three core themes:

Transference and Countertransference

Transference and countertransference are central concepts in psychoanalytic therapy, running through the therapeutic relationship and exerting a decisive influence on the course and outcome of treatment. Using a well prepared PPT titled “Concepts of Transference and Countertransference from Freud to the Present, Reinhard Otte systematically analyzed the theoretical evolution of these concepts in the context of the developmental trajectory of psychoanalytic history, helping candidates consolidate their theoretical foundations. He then guided candidates to study German psychoanalyst Werner Bohlebe’ s book “Transference - Countertransference - Intersubjectivity: Developing Its Inner Complexity”, and combined with typical clinical cases, delved into how to identify manifestations of transference and countertransference in practice and strategies for intervention using intersubjectivity theory.

Dream

Dreams serve as a core pathway for psychoanalysis to explore the unconscious. By interpreting the manifest and latent content of dreams, unrecognized psychological conflicts and emotional patterns in patients can be revealed. Using German psychoanalyst Stephan Hau’s chapter “Dreams and Dream Interpretation” from his book Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy as a theoretical framework, Reinhard Otte systematically introduced the formation mechanisms and symbolic meanings of dreams. He then led candidates to study Swiss psychoanalyst Fritz Morgenthaler’s book The Language of Dreams and integrated American psychoanalyst Susanne Singer’s classic lecture “Dreams: Bridges to the Unconscious” to discuss how to translate dream interpretation into therapeutic intervention strategies. Candidates shared typical dreams encountered in clinical practice (such as trauma-related nightmares and recurring imagery), fostering deep interaction between theory and practice.

Crisis in the Therapeutic Process - Negative Therapeutic Reactions

In psychoanalytic therapy, negative therapeutic reactions (such as resistance, symptom exacerbation) and crisis states are inevitable challenges in deepening treatment. Accurately identifying their dynamic mechanisms and implementing interventions embodies the core clinical competence of analysts. Reinhard Otte first introduced the concepts and manifestations of negative therapeutic reactions. He then guided candidates to study classic literature: Ogden, T.H. (1994): The Analytic Third: Working with Intersubjective Clinical Facts, exploring how to use the concept of "The Third" to understand projective identification and crisis transformation in the therapeutic relationship; Freud (1914): Remembering, Repeating, and Working Through and Further Recommendations on Technique in Psycho-Analysis, analyzing the dynamic balance between the compulsion to repeat and the therapeutic alliance during the working-through process. At the conclusion of the course, candidates engaged in heated discussions on technical issues such as "the scale of self-disclosure in crisis moments" and "the correlation between negative reactions and personality structure," creating a resonance between theory and clinical practice.

During the course, Dr. Reinhard Otte provided six in-depth clinical supervisions for candidates focusing on core topics such as transference-countertransference analysis, dream interpretation techniques, and negative therapeutic reactions. By guiding candidates to co-create spaces for reflection and containment in group case discussions, he facilitated a deeper understanding of the cases. His profound theoretical foundation and lively teaching style were highly appreciated.

In the theoretical learning and case discussion sessions, candidates demonstrated solid theoretical knowledge and keen clinical insights: both their interpretations of psychoanalytic concepts and dynamic analyses of cases received significant recognition from Otte. He repeatedly used the word "impressive" to commend the professionalism displayed by the candidates. This two-way exchange of ideas not only highlighted the professional competence of the Chinese Study Group candidates but also provided new perspectives for the localization adaptation of psychoanalytic theories.
